Two hours later, Rachel pulled up outside her house. She switched off the engine. The familiar night sounds of the Australian bush flowed through the open window. The far off howl of a wild dog, the whisper of the wind over the paddocks, the rustling of lizards as they raced through the shin-high, dry grass. She breathed in a scent that was as familiar to her as her own reflection.

Now what do I do?

Chris touched her hand gently where it rested on the steering wheel. “I can leave if you want me to.”

“No. I need you. I need this time together. Just the two of us. No one else.” With the realisation came a sense of peace; of surety. She turned to him in the dark, trying to discern his expression in the gloom and was relieved by the flash of his white teeth when he smiled.

“Always happy to oblige a lady.”

She laughed, feeling the stress of the past few hours slough off her shoulders. “Do you?” she teased.

“Do I what?”

“Oblige a lady.” Suddenly she wanted to hear his answer. How many other women had there been in his life since she told him to walk away?

“Rachel, you know you’re the only lady I ever oblige.”

“What? Not ever?” Half laughing, half crying she turned her hand and curled her fingers through his.

“Since the first moment I saw you, there’s never been anyone else for me. What about you? How many legions of admirers have you left by the roadside?”

“I dated but nothing serious. I tried oh so hard to get rid of you from my life, but it didn’t work.” Her voice sank to a whisper.

“We have a lot to talk about. I know I sure have a lot to tell you.” He raked a hand through his hair. “But let’s leave all the nitty-gritty stuff for the morning. Honey, I want you now.”

“I want you, too. Tomorrow sounds a good idea. You know, for a minute there back at the hall, I thought Rosie… ”

“Me too. I’m certain she would have said something though, Rach, if she’d heard any rumours. She’s never been one to keep quiet.”

“True.” She opened the car door. “Come on, cowboy. Time to show me your moves. Last one inside has to muck out the stables in the morning.”

She’d reached the verandah when Chris picked her up by the waist and slung her over his shoulder.

Laughing, Rachel cried, “We need to unlock the door and the key’s in my handbag.”

From the rear of the house a volley of shrill barking ensued. Not the deep-throated growls that Dragon made when strangers approached but the ‘don’t-forget-about-me’ excited yaps both her dogs treated her to every time she came home. It didn’t matter whether she’d been gone five minutes or five hours; her reception was always the same.

“I guess you better settle them down first,” grumbled Chris setting her on her feet.

Rachel dug in her bag and retrieved the key. Inserting it into the lock, she smiled up at him.
